Drawing on his knowledge of Arabic, Turkish and Hebrew, he delved into the history of the Ottoman Empire, where Jews lived amongst Arabs and Muslims for 400 years. It’s a good starting point for understanding today’s Arab and Muslim nationalism and politics.
