Cary served as President of the American Association of University Professors for six years. \n\n\n\nThis talk is part of a two-part series by the CSI Chapter of PSC-CUNY. The first part will be given by The Edward Said Professor of History at Columbia University\, Rashid Khalidi. Unfortunately\, there will not be an open discussion between Professors Khalidi and Nelson because Professor Khalidi specified that he would not participate in a discussion with a speaker opposing the boycott of Israel. SUMMARY:Progressive and Jew: Rereading Sartre in Light of Today’s Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:ISCA: Contemporary Antisemitism \n\n\n\nJean-Paul Sartre’s 1944\, Anti-Semite and Jew\, focuses on four protagonists. In addition to two groups of Jews\, namely\, the authentic and the inauthentic Jew\, Sartre introduces the Anti-Semite and the Democrat. While Sartre’s essay was written against the backdrop of WWII\, many of his insights are neither limited nor confined to that particular time and place and\, indeed\, have a relevance that applies to our own time and place. The talk\, a part of a larger project\, will position today’s progressives and their relationship to Jews within the context of Sartre’s observations. \n\n\n\nProfessor Oren Gross is the Irving Younger Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota Law School. He is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of international law and national security law. Professor Gross holds an LL.B. degree magna cum laude from Tel Aviv University\, and LL.M. and S.J.D. degrees from Harvard Law School. He has taught and held visiting positions at Harvard Law School and Princeton University. He is the author of numerous articles and two award winning books and is a member of the American Law Institute. Between 1986 and 1991\, Professor Gross served as a senior legal advisory officer in the international law branch of the Israeli Defense Forces’ Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

DESCRIPTION:After decades in which Anti-Zionism was a mainstay of the Arab world and at times the defining theme of Arab unity\, some of the Arab world are breaking away and embracing Israel as a legitimate\, and even indigenous element in the region. This is happening at a time when Anti-Zionism\, which seeps into antisemitism\, is gripping some parts of the West. This development raises questions about the connection between Western Anti-Zionism and regional Middle Eastern realities. \n\n\n\nDr. Einat Wilf is the co-author of “The War of Return: How Western Indulgence of the Palestinian Dream Has Obstructed the Path to Peace” and a leading intellectual and original thinker on matters of foreign policy\, economics\, education\, Israel and Zionism. She was a member of the Israeli Parliament from 2010-2013\, where she served as Chair of the Education Committee and Member of the influential Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. She is considered one of Israel’s most articulate representatives on the international stage. In the past she served as a Senior Fellow at the Jewish People Policy Institute\, Adjunct Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and as Foreign Policy Advisor to Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres. Dr. Wilf has a BA from Harvard\, an MBA from INSEAD in France and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Cambridge. Born and raised in Israel\, Dr. Wilf served as an Intelligence Officer in the Israel Defense Forces. She is the author of six books that explore key issues in Israeli society.

He is also the Co-convener of the recently established Israel-Hellenic Forum under the umbrella of B’nai B’rith International. He is the author of two books: US Foreign Policy in the European Media: Framing the Rise and Fall of Neoconservatism (IB TAURIS)\, and The Greek Crisis in the Media: Stereotyping in the International Press (Ashgate). In the summer of 2017 George was selected as ‘young leader’ by China’s Diplomatic Academy and in the spring of 2019 he was an International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP) Fellow of the US Department of State.
