DESCRIPTION:Cary Nelson is the Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts & Sciences Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His 35 authored or edited books include Our Last First Poets: Vision and History in Contemporary American Poetry (1981)\, Marxism and the Interpretation of Culture (1987)\, Higher Education Under Fire: Politics\, Economics\, and the Crisis of the Humanities (1994)\, Revolutionary Memory: Recovering the Poetry of the American Left (2001)\, Office Hours: Activism and Change in the Academy (2004)\, No University is an Island: Saving Academic Freedom (2010)\, The Case Against Academic Boycotts of Israel (2015)\, Dreams Deferred: A Concise Guide to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and the Movement to Boycott Israel (2016)\, Israel Denial: Anti-Zionism\, Anti-Semitism\, and the Faculty Campaign Against the Jewish State (2019)\, Not in Kansas Anymore: Academic Freedom in Palestinian Universities (2021)\, and Peace and Faith: Christian Churches and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (2021). Cary served as President of the American Association of University Professors for six years. \n\n\n\nThis talk is part of a two-part series by the CSI Chapter of PSC-CUNY. The first part will be given by The Edward Said Professor of History at Columbia University\, Rashid Khalidi. Unfortunately\, there will not be an open discussion between Professors Khalidi and Nelson because Professor Khalidi specified that he would not participate in a discussion with a speaker opposing the boycott of Israel. We at CAFI support informed discussion and therefore provide links to two talks on YouTube given by Cary Nelson so that you can listen to a different point of view without waiting a week to hear Cary Nelson talk.
